PG- A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (some v)
Sorry, no data yet.
Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys is a classic introduction to Greek Mythology, but I had some problems with it when I was younger. While the stories themselves- "The Gorgon's Head," "The Golden Touch" (King Midas), "The Paradise of Children" (Pandora's Box), "The Three Golden Apples," "The Miraculous Pitcher," and "The Chimaera"- are quite interesting and appropriate for young adult readers, the framing story was a collosal bore. How Hawthorne managed to have so much humor and ingenuity in his retellings without including much of it in his tale of the children of Tanglewood never ceases to amaze me. If you skip those parts, however, you'll find the rest delightful, especially the version with color illustrations. Please keep in mind that many versions are abridged- you'll want the complete story, of course.
